What is Fascia

Fascia is a seamless web of connective tissue that covers and connects the muscles, organs, nerves, veins and skeletal structures in our body.  It can effect every system and function in the body muscular, cellular, neurological, metabolic and so on.  Interestingly it is not composed of separate parts but rather an uninterrupted whole that goes from head to toe.

Fascial restrictions can exert enormous pressure up to 2000Ibs per square inch on pain sensitive structures.  So, a restriction can literally crush vital organs, nerves, arteries and pull the body out of alignment.

Excessive pressure such as this can explain why symptoms develop and may not respond to conventional treatment methods. It is important to note that myofascial restrictions do not show up in any of the standard tests (x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, myelograms, etc.), so that myofascial problems may be missed or misdiagnosed.

The ground substance of the fascial system is fluid in nature, and over time, due to physical trauma or repetitive strain the ground substance will lose its hydration and become solid.  This is how we get restrictions in the fascial system.  So just like a spider web, where you can pull at one end of the web and see a reflection of that pull transmit to somewhere else in the spider web, the same thing happens with our fascial web.  Thus restrictions in one part of the body can be felt as symptoms elsewhere in the body.  Over time as new restrictions build in addition to old restrictions, and they begin to pull within the body symptoms start to surface.  As we have seen these soft tissue restrictions will not show up in conventional standard testing.

Simply put, by taking off the straight jacket of pressure that can be exerted by fascial restrictions, the body can then self-regulate and heal. Since the fascial system is the immediate environment of every cell of the body, restrictions in it can affect any system in the body. By opening up the fascial system and taking the pressure off the cells, genuine authentic healing becomes possible.  The body is essentially a dynamic and self-regulating organism that needs balance to facilitate healing.
